Come To the Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association of Delaware Banquet

January 12, 2010

As the new Extension Vegetable and Fruit Specialist for the University of Delaware, I would like to invite you to support the Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association of Delaware by attending their annual awards banquet on Tuesday, January 19, 2010  at the Harrington Fire Hall in Harrington, Delaware.  Social hour starts at 6 p.m. and dinner and awards at 7 p.m.  Awards will include the Distinguished Service Award for individuals giving long time service to the vegetable and fruit industry in Delaware and the Family Award for a family with a long history contributing to the vegetable or fruit industries in Delaware.  Tickets are $20 and can be reserved by contacting Emmalea Ernest at emmalea@udel.edu.

I have arranged for a very interesting guest speaker this year – my cousin, Howie Franklin who was chief steward on Air Force One under 5 presidents.  As an interesting aside, I had lost touch with Howie for over 30 years until my daughter who is researching our family history located him last year.  He goes across the country and speaks on his experience aboard Air Force One.

This is a description:

Howie Franklin flew and served with five presidents on Air Force One and is the only person to do so. Howie tells fascinating and funny insider stories about the presidents and dignitaries, always speaking with the greatest respect. These wonderful, unique stories appeal to all audiences. Serving in the United States Air Force as the head flight attendant for AF-1 is quite different from how we normally perceive that job title in aviation.

Howie had many important responsibilities dealing with security, critical timetables, unusual requests and specific details. He was on ‘hugging’ terms with most of the first families and saw them at the best and worst of times. Howie tells about the unique characteristics of the Air Force One planes in addition to passengers. Retiring from the Air Force, he’s airport manager in North Carolina for The Little Airport with the Big Heart.

I would love to have you all there to share with our association, honor their award winners and hear Howie speak.
